A Red Rock Wonderland – Arches National Park, Utah

Inca to Inuit - Arches National Park

Perched high above the Colorado River in the red desert lands of Northern Utah stands over 2,000 natural stone arches. These sandstone arches stand proudly amongst a landscape of contrasting colours, landforms and textures unlike any other on Earth.

These lands although seemingly arid and inhospitable have been home to humans for the past ten thousand years, with the earliest signs of life still evident in the petroglyphs that are etched across the various rock formations within the park.

The 40-mile scenic drive through Arches National Park is like stepping onto another planet. A red, dry dusty, Salvador Dali-like landscape, this is Utah’s extended canyon country, carved and shaped by thousands and thousands of years of weathering and erosion.

Underfoot thousands of feet of salt rest deposited from a long gone sea that once flowed through these lands three hundred million years ago. It is the salt that is to thank for this otherworldly collection of natural wonders. The sheer density of the salt overpowers the sheet of red rock that lays on top of it, rising up through the rock and forming these organic structures and shapes.

Each natural arch has a limited lifespan, with the last arch, Wall Arch, some 12 feet wide, crashing down in 2008. Conversely, new arches continue to be discovered, named only by the person that discovers them.
